Why convert JPG to WebP?
JPG has been THE standard for photos for decades – not just on the internet. The format uses lossy compression (theoretically, it could even be lossless, but this is practically never used) and achieves good results. However, WebP goes one step further and produces files that are around 25 to 35 per cent smaller whilst maintaining the same visual quality.[2] Especially on image-heavy PAGES, this quickly adds up to significant savings in data usage and loading time.
Another advantage: unlike JPG, WebP also supports transparency. Whereas previously you had to switch between JPG (for photos) and PNG (for transparency), WebP allows you to combine both in a single format.
Browser support for WebP
The days when WebP only worked in Chrome are over. According to caniuse, global browser support now stands at over 97 per cent.[4] Firefox has supported the format since version 65, Safari since version 14, and Edge as well.[3] For current web projects, switching from JPG to WebP is therefore straightforward.
